Durability as a stat balance system, as in Diablo 2, is used as a chore to balance player investment. In BotW the developers seem to want the player to be resourceful, but also devalue resourcefulness by making common resource weapons weak. It seemed like the team couldn't decide how they would resolve two conflicting design ideas.
