2015 - 2020 Ford F150 - IWE issues - So the truck, 2016 F150 4x4, is making a loud grinding/rattling noise. Sounds like fly wheels rattling and rubbing together. This only does this some time on turning left and accelerating and stops when I let off the gas peddle. No - replace the IWE assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 308-07A. Proceed to Step 11. Test the IWE vacuum supply lines. Disconnect the vacuum supply line at the left or right IWE and connect a vacuum gauge to the supply line as shown in Figure 4. Start the engine and allow it to idle for 5 minutes to build vacuum.

An IWE Rattle would be evident at highway speeds, but the hum/grind would be faint to hear over cabin noise. And the noise isn't always at those speeds. I understand how frustrating this can be. The noise you are hearing is a vacuum issue. If it goes away when you switch it to 4x4 its a bad IWE or IWE solenoid. If it is the IWE grinding it's not urgent but it'll eventually grind itself out and the hub won't lock when you put it in 4x4.
